Giorgos Aivazoglou, the NBA's senior vice president and managing director for Europe and the Middle East, laid out NBA Europe at a panel in London. It would be a semi-open top tier of 16 teams, with 12 permanent franchises and four open spots, and the Basketball Champions League would be a fully open second tier. The plan, built with FIBA, is to launch at the start of the 2027-28 season. The open spots would go to the BCL finalists and the winners of qualification tournaments tied to domestic leagues. He called the EuroLeague a closed system and said talks with its clubs are ongoing.
